How to Raise Godly Children: Equip Your Kids for Today’s World
There is a spiritual war happening right now against our children. It feels more complex than ever before to raise godly children.
One challenge our kids face is the rise in anxiety and depression. Almost every day, I see a news article about the mental health crisis in our children. Though if you look at Instagram, it seems like everyone has it together. We see pictures of smiling kids, home-cooked meals, and unforgettable vacations.
I wish I could tell you the researchers got it all wrong. “See, look at this post. Here’s the proof! We’re fine.” But the more I talk to parents, the more I hear stories about kids feeling the heaviness of today’s world.
Talking about anxiety in our kids is a complicated topic. As moms, we tend not to do it. Because if we share with another mom that our child seems to be experiencing a lot of stomach aches, anxious thoughts, or difficulties at school, then does that mean we’re failing as parents?
We put ourselves and our kids in a vulnerable position when we share our children’s struggles. But you aren’t alone mama. Just because your child walks through a valley or storm does not mean you’re a bad mom.
Mama aren’t alone
I have yet to meet a mom who hasn’t questioned at one point in her journey. Am I doing this right? Am I ruining my kids?
To make matters worse, I can’t tell you how many times older women have said to me, “I don’t envy you. Raising kids in today’s world. That’s terrible. I’d never want to do that! I feel sorry for parents today.” I know they’re coming from a good place, but it doesn’t make me feel any better about raising godly children in an ungodly world.
But what if I told you our kids don’t have to walk around fearful? They don’t have to be anxious. We don’t have to constantly question if we’re failing them.
How do I know this to be true? Because God put our sons and daughters in this generation for such a time as this. Ephesians 2:10 (NKJV) tells us:
For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.
Before the beginning of time, God created good works for you to complete. He saw fit for you to be in this generation. God does not make mistakes. And He has good plans for your life (Jeremiah 29:11)
You were made to mother in this moment!
There is more available to you and your family. You don’t need to walk around scared, worried, anxious. God cares, and when you call on His name, He shows up.
His word tells us in Psalm 92:13:
Those who are planted in the house of the Lord
Shall flourish in the courts of our God.
Our families can flourish. Our children prosper. Even in a broken world! How? By planting ourselves in the house of the Lord.
We can help our kids navigate the world well by laying a firm foundation in their minds and hearts.
They can learn how to:
- Take every thought captive (guarding their mind)
- Discern whether songs, movies, or books are life-giving (guarding their heart)
- Discover what Scripture says about who they are (guarding their identity).
