You just finish painting and changing out your hunter green and burgundy couch for a sleek new brown sectional and all of a sudden brown is out and gray is in. Now you’ve spent good money on the earth tones you love and they seem dated and out of style! Not many people have an unlimited budget and enough time or energy to start over. So how do you decorate beyond the trends? Is it possible to still love your home and have the surroundings feel fresh and inviting regardless of color trends and changes in style and design?

I believe the answer lies in PERSONALIZING your home! Those of you who know me well, know I have an obssession with decorating, crafting and creating spaces that feel warm and inviting.

How To Decorate Beyond the Trends

We built a new home 5 years ago. It was right at the end of the earth tone trend. I love all those earthy colors: greens, yellows and blues. So that is what I chose for my house. Then boom, a year later, earth tones were out and gray with pops of bright colors were in! I started asking myself, how can I decorate my house to make it feel fresh and up to date? How do I want it to feel when I walk in? Does it feel cozy and inviting to my family, my friends? What can be learned about our family just by looking around? Does our home reflect our personalities?

What I have learned over the years is that you are happiest with your home when you are surrounded by things you LOVE and that have MEANING! Decorating with pieces that evoke happy memories. Perhaps a gallery wall filled with photos and art work that is personal. You could include pictures of places you’ve travelled, scripture or quotes you love, inspirational mixed media pieces that bring in those pops of color and breath new life into a room!
