Sensory Cardboard Box Fun
Doesn’t it seem like kids like things that aren’t toys the best? That is part of my inspiration behind this sensory cardboard box activity. On rainy or cold days we are often stuck inside and it’s difficult to keep Izzy entertained. Days after playing with the same toys, she naturally gets bored! She likes experiencing new things and that isn’t easy to do when you can’t go anywhere. So I decided to make the best of it and I searched my house for items I could use to create a sensory experience for our daughter. I remember playing in large cardboard boxes as a child so I thought why not try it with Izzy?
After some searching we decided to make our own sensory cardboard box with things we had around the house. Here is our before picture:
I remember hearing someone say this about cooking:
I like it for crafting as well “use what you have.”
There is no secret recipe or formula, just find things around your house that are shiny or have texture. Sometimes Izzy seems to like household items better than her toys.
After I cut the ends of the box off to create the tunnel I realized it was a little wobbly. So to keep it from falling over I added braces (small triangles) on the top corners. In the future I wouldn’t cut the entire end off, but shape the ends like an upside down U. So it looks like a tunnel! I carefully poked holes in the box and added the Christmas lights, glow sticks, and decorative flowers.
Our baby loved the Christmas lights and scooting herself through the cardboard box. I can’t wait to get bigger boxes and create more tunnels, caves, and hideouts!

This is a GENIUS idea! We’ve had a lot of snow days out of school and stuck inside and my kids would have loved this! I’m going to save the next big box and make this! Thanks so much for inspiring a fun activity!

I think this is brilliant. I used to do stuff like this when my kids were babies. At that age, it doesn’t take much to wow them.
So true! The smallest thing, for example a plastic spoon, can amaze Ellie.
