The Truth About Canned Tomatoes

I love learning about healthy cooking and eating.  (Check out my thoughts on healthy eating = Let’s Get Back to Eden)

I recently saw an article about foods to avoid and I was immediately intrigued.  It’s titled “8 Food Even the Experts Won’t Eat.”  Read it here

I was most surprised to see canned tomatoes on the list.  I mean tomatoes are healthy right?  It’s a lot better than eating candy or potato chips.  Although deceptively healthy, canned tomatoes can be harmful.  The main reason the endocrinologist in the article doesn’t eat canned tomatoes is BPA.

To learn more about BPA read these studies from the Journal of the American Medical Association:

Canned Soup & BPA (Crazy that consuming 1 serving of canned soup daily over 5 days was associated with a more than 1000% increase in urinary BPA!)

BPA & Medical Disorders (In summary – higher urinary concentrations of BPA were associated with an increased prevalence of cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and liver-enzyme abnormalities).

After I read this I immediately went to my pantry and checked out my cans of diced tomatoes.  I was surprised to see that Muir Glen Organic Diced Tomatoes was BPA free.  I’m not sure why they write it in such small print on the back of the can, but it is there!  Another brand that the article suggests that can be found in most grocery stores is Bionaturae.  Although these products may be more expensive it may be worth it in the long run!

  1. Ooh, good to know about Muir Glen. I just read that article too, and was a bit upset, because I hate handling raw tomatoes!
It can be so hard trying to eliminate all of these different things from our diet–hormones, pesticides, BPA, MSG, etc etc–especially without spending a fortune!
