Birth Story Part One

In college I was obsessed with the show “A Baby Story” on TLC. I don’t know why, but I was fascinated by labor and delivery. One of my friends recently suggested I become a doula because she knows how interested I am in the topic. It would be an awesome experience, but I get queasy when I see blood or bodily fluids so it’s probably not the job for me.

Anyway, I wanted to write out baby boy’s birth story so I can remember the details and document this wonderful day. Warning this will be a long post and if you feel uncomfortable reading for any reason please skip it.

Here is goes…

With my daughter I was 2 weeks overdue so I knew there would be a good chance I went past my due date again. Well here I was at 10 days past my due date. If I’m being honest I don’t think I’d felt a single contraction or even Braxton hicks. I was 1 cm dilated and 50% effaced with a very posterior cervix. Nothing had changed in the last 3 weeks of my pregnancy. I tried everything I knew of (besides castor oil) to get things going with no success. I knew I was at the point of induction. On one hand I kept thinking should I just wait this out, I mean I can’t be pregnant forever? But ultimately after prayer and consideration we decided it was time.

We moved in the middle of my pregnancy, which made me nervous because I wanted to find the best possible care. I was so thankful to find a great doctor in our new location. Because I was going to be induced I was able to choose the day he would be in the hospital. I saw him the day before my scheduled induction in the clinic and I asked him about a Foley catheter. Read more about the use of a Foley with induction and pregnancy here. I had one inserted with Izzy to help dilate me to 3 cm. It’s an alternative to cytotec and I felt a more natural way to get things started. He was able to insert one in the office and it fell out later that night. There was a “chance” this could cause me to go into labor overnight. That night I tried to walk him out. Again, I maybe felt one contraction?

We woke up bright and early the next morning to head to the hospital. I was anxious to see if the Foley catheter did anything to my cervix. It took a while to get checked in and settled in our room. I was nervous! The doctor checked me and sure enough I was 3 cm. We decided he would try to break my water to see if that got things started. He was able to knick the bag of waters, but because my cervix was so posterior and the baby’s head was right on it not much happened. After two attempts at breaking my water, I walked the halls.

One of the reasons I loved my doctor is because he heard my voice. He knew I wanted the least medicated birth possible and he let me try natural methods before administering drugs. Every hour  or so they would hook me up to the monitors. I was having very small contractions.

Here is the second part of IJ’s birth story.

  1. I am 40 weeks today with my first–nothing happening yet, much like you! I was checked on Thursday and only 1 cm dilated with also a very posterior cervix. It’s okay with me… my doctor is fine with letting us wait till 42 weeks before we induce medically, so I’m hoping to go into labor on my own before then. Trusting in God’s perfect timing!! 🙂
