Perspective – What Truly Matters in Life?

What truly matters in life? Jesus

Time is so precious. I enjoy being ‘busy’ instead of being bored but as a new mom I’ve come to realize how much I value time! I often think ‘if I only had more time in the day.’ It’s so easy to get distracted by the things of life. Although I enjoy an organized house, I have to admit this is not one of my strengths. But if I had more time then my house would be clean and organized right? (wink, wink).

Recently I was reading the story of Mary and Martha in the Bible. If you aren’t familiar with this passage it can be found in Luke 10:38-42 (NLT). Jesus comes to visit their house and Martha is busy making dinner and taking care of things around the home while Mary sits at Jesus’ feet and listens to him talk. As you can imagine, Martha didn’t think this was right! Why was she doing all the work? So she told Jesus “Lord, doesn’t it seem unfair to you that my sister just sits here while I do all the work? Tell her to come and help me.” (verse 40).

You may be surprised by Jesus’ response!
41 But the Lord said to her, “My dear Martha, you are worried and upset over all these details! 42 There is only one thing worth being concerned about. Mary has discovered it, and it will not be taken away from her.”

God reminded me of something when I read this story. It’s not about having the cleanest house, the best blog post, the best Easter eggs, and the list could go on. It’s about HIM. It’s so easy to get wrapped up in life. But what truly matters? This is why I try to read His word every day. It gives me perspective and reminds me of the things that are eternal, lovely, pure.

So what is that one thing that Jesus talks about? It’s His presence; Fellowship with the Lord! My prayer this Easter weekend is that you would find Jesus and His everlasting love. He paid the price on calvary, He died so that you may live. He overcame the grave so you may be saved. That same spirit that raised Jesus from the dead can live in you! Everlasting life, peace that passes all understanding, and an eternal love can be yours.

  1. Interesting how the Lord keeps putting things in front of you to make sure you slow down and understand the message. Our Easter service message was also on Mary, how she was always there listening and learning from Jesus, even at the foot of the cross. Thanks for sharing.
